Last week I wrote a post for home shoppers looking for communities where they can take a leisurely swim, play a round of golf or an hour or so of pickleball, and perhaps take a long walk on nature trails followed by with cocktails with neighbors at a club house, all within a few steps of their front doors.
In other words, folks who want to live at a resort.
The post was timely because so many of our clients are retired or semi-retired and yearning for lots of leisure time as opposed to yard-maintenance time. Many want to enjoy active days with less time on our increasingly busy roads. The really great news is that builders are responding in a big way to this demographic, as you can see when you visit the communities spotlighted at our Web site. In fact I’d say the vast majority of the new neighborhoods being built right now offer these kinds of amenities.
Today – in the height of summer – I’m thinking about people who absolutely love Delaware’s beautiful beaches, particularly those who want to get there easier. One good way to enjoy that lifestyle is to buy a home east of Route One, thereby minimizing the “commute” to sun and sand and all of the fun things you can do there.
Since there are so many communities in this vicinity I’ll cover them in a couple of posts, including this one focusing on those just east of downtown Lewes.
On the Bike Trails to Historic Downtown and Close to the Beach as Well
Over the past two decades several wonderful communities have been built just outside historic downtown Lewes. They can be reached from Kings Highway or Gills Neck Road, and offer easy bike access to the town center, Cape Henlopen State Park and so many other local attractions.
At Breakwater you’ll find lovely single family homes, twin homes and townhouses in a walkable neighborhood with a beautiful pool and club house.
Governors is right next door, and offers single family houses and townhomes, along with some opportunities to purchase a lot and build new. It also has a nice pool and club house and a “tot lot” playground for your grandkids.
Hawkseye also has new and resale homes, including many on large lots with many luxurious amenities. There’s also a large pool and a club house, and an active neighborhood association that plans many activities for residents.
Senators is a well-established community that offers resale homes built by Schell Brothers, along with a pool and club house. Many of these homes are also large and grand but there are lots of options if you want a smaller home with a first floor master bedroom.
Showfield is another great community in the same area, with some of the largest lots and grandest homes and a place where you can buy an existing home or build your own, with no builder tie-in. Because of its elevation, you can also buy or build a home with a basement and in-ground pool. When completed, it will also have extensive walking trails, a restored barn as a neighborhood gathering place, a large club house with a fitness center and gathering space and a lovely pool.
Wolfe Pointe and Wolfe Runne are the oldest communities in this area, which means you have the opportunity to buy in a community with lots of well-established trees and other landscaping in a picturesque setting right off of scenic Gills Neck Road.
Olde Town at White’s Pond will be the final community in the full development of this area. It’s adjacent to the other neighborhoods and presently comprised of home sites around a natural pond. It’s the closest to downtown Lewes, which is easily reached by bike or on foot, and offers you the opportunity to build your dream home from the ground up.
One special note: All of these communities are open to people of all ages, so if you’re still raising youngsters they’ll be able to attend wonderful schools close to downtown!
