It’s about three months before beach season, when millions travel to Lewes, Rehoboth and Bethany for fun in the sun and all of the associated pleasures of our coast. Yet hardly a day goes by when we don’t hear about people discovering other wonderful places throughout our beautiful state.
The latest comes from a travel blogger who jets all over the world yet somehow found a way to describe some of Delaware’s top destinations in a Top 10 list of great places to live. I always enjoy reading posts like this because it’s fun to see how journalists who aren’t from here discover us, and also for the affirmation that our agents have so many great opportunities to help people find wonderful homes.
With that in mind I’ll do a bit of paraphrasing to convey the blogger’s perceptions of five distinct areas, coupled with a quick primer on the neighborhoods located closest to each prime destination. Pike Creek
Situated close to Newark and Wilmington is Pike Creek, which is also close to the Middle Valley Natural Area and White Clay Creek State Park. People love these places for all of the outdoor pleasures, including miles of trails for walking and mountain biking in both spots and opportunities to fish in Delaware’s most highly stocked creek.

Newark
If you remember all the fun you had in college and are interested in continuing your education or just being close to all kinds of wonderful culture, check out Newark, home to the University of Delaware’s main campus and also an easy commute to Philadelphia. Milton, Lewes, Rehoboth
None of us at Active Adults are surprised these three communities made the list! Milton offers a vibrant downtown with the Milton Theatre and wonderful restaurants along with beautiful historic homes, and with thousands of new homes coming soon.
Lewes, where Bill and I live, is an absolute treasure, featuring the oldest standing residence in Delaware, the fascinating campus of the Lewes Historical Society, and (in our opinion) some of the finest and most fun restaurants in the state.
And what else can we say about Rehoboth that hasn’t been said by so many people who love its long oceanside boardwalk, downtown streets with all kinds of fun shopping, and pristine beach.
The great news if you want to live in any of these communities is that lower Sussex County has become an enormously popular place for homebuilders at every scale. For that reason there are well over a dozen communities, some well-established and some new, giving you lots of options for customizing your dream home.

Camden and Highland Acres
Located in central Delaware near our state capital of Dover, Camden and Highland Acres are fine areas if you’ve got school-aged children and if you enjoy nature, which you’ll find in abundance at First State Heritage Park, and at Brecknock County Park. You can also and learn unvarnished American History at John Dickinson Plantation.
