One of the most important conversations we have with clients who are searching for new homes focuses on both the types of architectural features they love and how they really want to spend their leisure time.
Nights at the theatre or days on the beach? Pickleball or golf? Container gardening or an acre of vegetable gardens and grass?
While some of your answers will help us zero in on certain neighborhoods, others might prompt a broader look at the entire state. In other words, the specific offerings in each of Delaware’s three counties: New Castle up north. Kent in the middle. And Sussex in the south.
Fortunately, there are Active Adults agents who understand each county’s cultural and recreational options. They also know all about the neighborhoods where you’re most apt to find the home that best suits your needs. Over the next three weeks I’ll spotlight each county, beginning with New Castle.
New Castle County: Shorter Commutes and More Culture
New Castle is the state’s most populous county, and a good place to live if you work in and around Wilmington or even farther north in Philadelphia. It’s also a lovely place if you enjoy cultural attractions and American history and the gorgeous vistas of the Brandywine Valley.
If Colonial architecture is your thing, you’ll love the town of New Castle, with streets lined with beautiful restored homes and shops in buildings dating back to the 1700s. Its downtown is especially charming and home to the legendary Jessop’s Tavern and Nora Lee’s French Quarter Bistro. All year long there are historic reenactments and special events at the town’s museums and parks.
Likewise, you might enjoy the town of Newark, home to the University of Delaware and surrounded by 12,000 acres of parklands, including the Middle Run area. It offers a vibrant downtown full of fun shops and restaurants, and many lovely housing options as well.
Nearby, the Brandywine Valley is home to many wonderful museums and cultural sites such as Longwood Gardens, Winterthur and the Delaware Art Museum.
And if you’re more apt to enjoy canoeing or hiking than riding ocean waves you’ll also find lots of recreational activities in the nearby Brandywine Valley .
Great Neighborhoods . . . and Convenient Services
New Castle County offers a variety of neighborhoods suited to a variety of lifestyles. Search for those in the Wilmington/Brandywine Valley area and you see many that are perfect for folks who want to live in a 55+ community.
Newark also offers proximity to significant cultural attractions without being too far for a day trip to the Delaware Bay beaches or a bit longer trip to the Sussex County beaches. And as you’ll see in the write-up on our site, you’re within an easy drive of the Chesapeake Bay and towns in Maryland and New Jersey, as well.
Another New Castle favorite is Middletown. It offers a quaint downtown and many fairly new communities, including many perfectly suited to the 55+ lifestyle. See our website where we spotlight 13 comminities. Most feature modern single family homes most prominently, but if you’re an old house buff check out this sweet three-story Federal dating back to 1856.
We’re Here to Help You Find Your Perfect Home
Also keep in mind that we’re also well acquainted with all types of other offerings beyond these planned communities. Whether you’re looking at historic houses in Newark, New Castle or Wilmington, or country estates in Hockessin, or contemporary pizzaz around the Wilmington riverfront, our agents are ready to ensure you find the perfect home for the lifestyle you love.
