Readers of this blog probably won’t be surprised to see I’m writing about one of the most popular New Years Resolutions – which is to get, or stay, in good physical shape. Chances are you’ll see all kinds of similar content in all kinds of media outlets since a lot of us are still eating wonderful leftovers and feeling like we’re hibernating through the depths of winter.
What Works for Me
My hope is that you’ll be encouraged by what’s working for me, and realize that physical activity is within everyone’s reach, and that it can actually be a lot of fun.
That’s the way I’ve felt ever since I started working out at Fit Body Boot Camp at the Five Points shopping center. Yes, I know “boot camp” sounds scary, but it’s really just a catch-all phrase for the rigorous but reasonable level of activity the club facilitates for everyone on the fitness spectrum.
Why it Works for Me
The two main things I like about the Fit Body experience there is that one, it doesn’t take a lot of time to accomplish. The studio has a unique 30-minute workout – done to music, which I love – that combines High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) with Active Rest Training to burn calories rapidly and keep your metabolism running at a higher rate for a day and a half after your workout.
Second, the experience is nicely tailored for folks who are aged 50 and above. While you work out in a small group – which can add a sense of camaraderie – the sessions are led by trainers who personalize the activities based on what’s best for you. So whether you’re just embarking on a quest to get fit or already accustomed to frequent physical activity, you’re practically guaranteed to get a work-out that makes the most of your abilities while encouraging you to reach higher levels of fitness.
More than a Gym
Simply put, our boot camp is more than a gym – it’s a fitness family, thanks to all of the positivity and encouragement from other members and the coaches and the owner. As a result I’ve been motivated to take on a big challenge. Over the next eight weeks I’m taking two Fit Body classes a week, and getting weighed in with a coach, and accessing a nutrition app that’s going to help me ensure the calories I’m taking in will support my goals.
Talk about a resolution! Fortunately, thanks to my Fit Body crew, I know it’ll be fun. And because it’s fun I know I’ll stay on track. I’m also glad to know that our communities here at the beach offer many other ways to keep that fitness resolution, from walking to biking to pickleball and tennis. I’ll share more details on all of that in an additional blog post next week.
In the meantime, let me wish a Happy New Year to all of you, with best wishes for everything you resolve to do in 2022!
