According to Fairway-Rehoboth’s Coat Drive organizer Gail Alm, CMP, “We will be collecting new and gently used coats at both our locations. Coats that we collect will be then be donated to Friendship House Clothing Bank of DE and Casa San Francisco in Milton. Our goal is to collect 100 coats. Let’s join together once again and this time to keep our community warm.”

The Need for A Warm Coat

Health experts report that even a 2-degree drop in body temperature results in reduced heart rate, loss of coordination, and confusion. Adults cannot work effectively and children find it difficult to learn. For most, a warm coat solves the problem. But, for the now nearly 15% of Americans living in poverty, a warm winter coat is a budget “extra.” -U.S. Census data September 2011 and Hypothermia, University of Maryland Medical Center

Who needs a warm coat this year?

  • The triple disasters of the century’s worst storms, prolonged unemployment and shrinking public-sector budgets have created a rising tide of need.
  • 1 in 5 children live in households whose earnings fall below the poverty level in the U.S.-2010 U.S. Census
  • An estimated 671,850 Americans experience homelessness on any given night. -Annie E. Casey Foundation, August 2011
  • In 2009, 31 percent of U.S. children lived in families where no parent had full-time, year-round employment. (2.9 million more than in 2008.) -Annie E. Casey Foundation, August 2011

Coats can be dropped off during regular business hours at 37156 Rehoboth Ave, Suite 1, in Rehoboth Beach and 5301 Limestone Road, Suite 106, in Wilmington.
